Frequently Asked Questions

Things you gotta know

Do you have puppies?

Check the "Puppies" page. If it's not listed there, "probably not now.” Basenji girls only comes into season once a year, typically in the fall. Once bred, pups are normally born in or around December, with puppies going home that spring. If you're interested in pursuing this, please go to our "Contact" page and fill out an application.

How much is a puppy?

Though a fair question, if this is your first thought, Saorsa Basenjis might not be the best choice for you. First, there are so many other things to think about. Secondly, there are many more expenses to come (food, vet care, toys, training, etc).  However we understand that it's something you need to know, especially when some breeds, "designer dogs" especially, go for over $4,000. It's also a question we can't answer right away. Ethical breeders are not in it for the money, and the major factor in price per puppy is the cost of producing and raising the litter. However we can tell you it will probably be less than half what's quoted above.

What do I get when I buy a Saorsa Basenji?

Saorsa puppies will have their first round of vaccinations (we follow Dr.Dodd's vaccination protocol), be vet-checked (including fecal exam) and will have begun their puppy education. They will be started in house- and crate- training, and will have been introduced to clicker training and have some basic skills started, such as Sit, Come and Attention.

Probably most importantly you get the knowledge and lifetime support of a caring, preservation breeder. Call me day or night with questions, and I am there. And if ever, for any reason, you need to rehome your dog, I will take him.

Can I choose my puppy?

Short answer: no.
Nuanced answer: We will choose your puppy together.  As we get to know you, and what you need and expect in a dog, we will have a better idea about what sort of puppy will do well in your home. We also need to get to know the puppies in the litter - they're not all the same, after all. And of course, we need to decide which puppy will be staying at Saorsa. With all these factors taken into consideration, as well as your sex and color preference, a puppy will be matched to your needs.

Can I name my puppy?

Of course! What you call your puppy at home is totally up to you. All Saorsa puppies are registered with the AKC with our prefix, and we usually have litter theme to which we like to adhere. We are happy to pick a registered name for you, or we can decide together. We totally understand that it can be fun and exciting to select a "fancy" registered name for your new puppy.

All that other stuff is great, but how to I *get* a puppy?

First, fill out a questionnaire on the Contact Us page - that will get the demographic and basic stuff out of the way. Please be forthcoming with ages, and number of people living in the home. Then we need to chat and meet every member of your household. Each puppy is very important to us, and we need to get to know you a little before agreeing to place a puppy with you. A home visit is also required prior to placement - this is mainly to make sure it is "Basenji secure". Consider Saorsa Basenjis more of a "boutique", rather than a puppy super store where you just pay your money and get a dog.
First, it's important to us that we are a good fit. Not just for a Basenji, but for one of the puppies in our litter. And while we do not expect to be your new best pal, we should get along well enough to have coffee together. With any luck this will be a 16 year relationship. It is a two way street - you should feel good about us, and vice versa. Preference is given to local families, in part because it is easier to get to know you, especially during puppy visits once they are born, but also in case you need in-person help. We'll be there!

Can I get a puppy at/before 8 weeks?

Well.... No. Though adorable at that age, there are some important developmental milestones that happen between 8-12 weeks of age, including a “fear period”. We spend that time making sure the puppies are as well socialized as possible while watching out to ensure that they aren’t pushed too hard during a fear period. Don't worry, your new pup will bond with you beautifully even at 12 weeks of age. And your pup will come with some important skills.

We encourage you to come and visit the puppies. This helps us all get to know each other and you can have fun snuggling babes. We promise you and your Basenji puppy will fall in love.

How soon can the puppy be spayed/neutered?

Current research in dogs’ physical & emotional development suggests that it’s better to wait until they are a little more mature. There are some significant and crucial growth stages that occur as dogs grow up, and we believe that the benefits to the dog’s well-being outweigh the inconvenience of owning an “intact” dog for a year or two. There is never a “one-size-fits-all” answer, though, so make sure to talk with us if you have any particular concerns or circumstances. Ideally we ask no sooner than 12 to 18 months. However, we do require that companions be spayed or neutered by age 2.

What requirements does Saorsa have for puppy families?
Of course, most things are negotiable. However if you own a home with a yard, a secure fence is a must. Six foot, estate style fencing with no gaps is the best for Basenjis. We do not require all families have yards, but if not you must be dedicated to regular leashed walks. This is not only important potty and exercise time, but also life-enrichment and relationship development. All Basenjis, with or without yards, benefit immensely from daily walks.

Companions (dogs not being shown or active in performance events) must be altered, ideally between 12 & 24 months. If you have concerns about this, we can have a discussion.

Most of all we want owners who are ready to embrace the quirks, often fun and charming but sometimes challenging, of the breed. Curiosity and honesty in buyers is important to us. Just as we will be forth coming and open with you, we look for buyers who ask questions, are open to learning, and will keep us up to date with their little friend. If you just want to buy a dog and never hear from your breeder again, we are not a good fit.

Where can I find out more about Basenjis?

The Basenji Club of America (BCOA) has an incredible amount of information about the breed, including history, health information, and their “Basenji University” for new and future Basenji families.
